All the Information You Need on Undergraduate Admissions Testing

Applications to undergraduate schools can be made stronger by having taken one or more of the following tests

The PSAT
The PSAT provides practice for the SAT and measures critical reading, math problem solving and writing skills.  The PSAT will familiarize you with the types of questions asked on the SAT and will show you where you can make some improvements. The SAT shows college admissions boards how you compare to other college applicants.

The SAT:
The SAT uses essays, multiple choice, sentence examination and reading comprehension to assess your ability to read critically, use mathematical procedures and write.  Most colleges require the SAT scores for application.  Register online at collegeboard.com to print your admission ticket, view and send your SAT scores once they're available.  The SAT is a three-hour and 45-minute test that costs about $41.50.

The ACT:
The ACT is a multiple choice test that assesses skills in English, mathematics, reading and science.  An optional writing test will measure planning and essay-writing skills.  The ACT is required and preferred by many four-year colleges. Registration fees are $30 and $45 for the ACT plus the optional writing portion.

The SAT II:
The SAT II uses multiple choice and an essay to assess what you know about specific subjects.   The SAT II is another way for colleges to compare you to other applicants and can also help you decide on an appropriate course of study once you're admitted.  The SAT II lasts one-hour and registration fees vary depending on the subject test.  The average registration fee is $10.
